2014 / vending machine, toy capsules, paper, vinyl / dimensions vary
This interactive installation distributes free compliments, submitted by the public, through a toy vending machine. The purpose is to reinvent public space to be more engaging and playful, creating a platform for conversation between strangers.
Complimentary was first created for the 2014 Art in Odd Places (AiOP) FREE festival, an annual event presenting visual and performance art in unexpected public spaces along 14th Street in Manhattan.
Since its debut, the project has also been installed at AiOP RECALL in 2015, Martha Stewart's American Made Summit, IdeasCity: New Museum (with AiOP), and the Hudson River Museum. It currently resides at the Centre for Social Innovation (CSI) in NYC.
